Kennedy McMann Has Been Preparing to Play Nancy Drew All Her Life

Kennedy McMann and Leah Lewis speak on stage during the Nancy Drew panel at 2019 New York Comic Con at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Sunday (October 6) in New York City.

The two actors were joined by co-stars Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Maddison Jaizani and Scott Wolf as they promoted the new CW show.

In a recent interview, Kennedy opened up about how it was fate for her to play the title role.

“I come from a super literary family. My mom’s an author. I grew up reading the books. I played the computer games all through college. I was hogging the family computer when I was a kid, and then it just became my laptop, when I was 19, (with) different ‘Nancy Drew’ games on it,” she shared. “So I was pretty well versed. When it came about I was, like, ‘Ah, ah, I’ve been doing this my whole life. I’m ready to go.’

Kennedy adds, “But then when I got the part, it had been a while since I read the books. And I intentionally did not reread them because I was confident in the history that I had with the character, and I felt like I knew her really well.”

“I feel like I wanted to just be true and dedicate myself to the Nancy that we were creating, with all the knowledge that I already had to back up the historical relevance of her traits and things like that.”

However, Kennedy‘s Nancy is a bit different from the 1930s book version: “She’s very prim and proper in the 1930s editions of the books, and we’re showing her in a more modern context. But, yeah, I think that there is just a broader market for a lot riskier material.”

Kennedy McMann Talks 'Nancy Drew' at PaleyFest: 'She's Not The Perfect Detective'

Kennedy McMann is spilling on her favorite part of playing Nancy Drew!

The 22-year-old actress joined the show’s cast for 2019 PaleyFest‘s fall TV previews on Saturday night (September 7) at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, Calif.

She was joined by her co-stars including Tunji Kasim, Maddison Jaizani, Alex Saxon, Leah Lewis, Kennedy McMann and Scott Wolf as well as writers Kennedy McMann and Melinda Hsu Taylor and producer Stephanie Savage.

During the panel, Kennedy explained that she loves that Nancy isn’t the perfect character.

“For me it’s refreshing because she’s not the perfect girlfriend, daughter, robot, detective girl. That’s not interesting at all to me. The stuff that drives me is this realistic messiness that’s displayed in all the grey areas of life,” Kennedy said on stage.

'Nancy Drew' Stars Reveal That the CW Series Is a 'Different Imagining' of the Classic Books!

The CW is gearing up for another bold re-imagining of a classic series.

Follow the massive success of Riverdale, based on the Archie Comics, the network will debut its new take on Nancy Drew this fall.

The stars of the upcoming drama teased what fans can expect from Season 1 during an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con in San Diego, Calif.

Kennedy McMann, who stars as Nancy in the series, says she’s a huge fan of the books and that she’s been preparing to play the teen detective, “truly for my entire life.”

“I think there’s a sense of her character that comes from the games and comes from the books that you only know intimately if you’ve really gotten to know them,” she said of Nancy. “There’s this cunning but this sense of humor mixed into it, and this sense of [how] she never doubts herself, that I really wanted to make sure stayed true [in] this representation of her.”

Leah Lewis, who plays George, said that the show will be more focused on characters than the books were.

“All the characters in this are very relatable and human,” Leah said. “In the books I feel like it focuses more on them in action, whereas this focuses a lot on the relationships.”

Finally, Tunji Kasim, who plays Ned “Nick” Nickerson in the show, says his character in particular “is quite a different imagining from the books. We’ve kind of started again with his character, and actually Ned — a.k.a. Nick — has a bit of a history.”

If the network’s take on Riverdale is any indication, we’re sure that applies to every aspect of Nancy Drew.
