Lorde recently opened up to Vogue Australia about some of the “witchy” things she does to prepare for a show.

I’ve got flowers and arranged them in a little way before I go on stage, or a few times I covered my hands in glitter using my hands like little energy conductors,” Lorde said.

Lorde's Pre-Show Rituals Often Involve Flowers & Glitter

Lorde rocks a big furry coat in her new photo shoot for Vogue Australia‘s October 2017 issue, on newsstands September 25.

Here’s what the “Green Light” singer had to share:

On songwriting: “I think the key is to keep making really personal records. That’s kind of always been my thing, to tell my specific story, in all its awkwardness and weirdness and greatness.”

“I’ll notice something and write it down and I’m definitely doing that all the time,” joking that her friends must find it annoying. “I do it constantly: my notes are just full of my observations.” When a common thread emerges, she joins the dots. She’s done it for so long, she doesn’t let it get in the way of experiences. “People close to me definitely realize me pulling my phone out and writing down something they’ve said … but I don’t try to chase the story too much. I just sort of let it happen.”

On staying creative during her performances, with a grueling tour schedule stretching into 2018: “I’ve got flowers and arranged them in a little way before I go on stage, or a few times I covered my hands in glitter using my hands like little energy conductors. So I’ve been doing weird witchy things.”

Lorde Doesn't Care What Haters Think About Her Dancing VMAs Performance

Lorde suffered from the flu during the 2017 MTV VMAs, so she wasn’t able to sing as planned — but that doesn’t mean she didn’t perform.

The 20-year-old singer danced her heart out instead and had the best time. Unfortunately, her creative performance wasn’t immune to trolls.

According to the Daily Mail some people were upset with her performance, though she doesn’t feel even the slightest bit bad.

“People got so angry about me performing at the VMAs,” she told Marc Maron this week on the podcast WTF. “I just danced!”

“I danced with full f-king joy,” Lorde added. “Some people were like ‘we get it,’ but others were like, ‘This is offensive that I have to watch this.’”

“[As if it's] sooo private seeing someone experience such joy,” she continued.

We loved her performance, and think it’s amazing that rather than bow out she decided to deliver her fans some of her joyous personality.

Lorde Opens Up About the Meaning Behind Her Sad Song 'Liability'

Lorde wasn’t able to sing at the 2017 MTV VMas due to the flu, but she brought her voice back for an intimate concert in Los Angeles Tuesday evening (August 29).

The 20-year-old singer sang a bunch of the songs off her new album, and got real with her fans about what the album means to her.

Specifically, Lorde explained what prompted her to write the song “Liability.”

“I started crying in the back of this Uber,” she remembered. “It was the kind of crying where I was like, trying to do it really quietly so the driver didn’t hear me. He definitely knew I was crying, let’s be real.”

“I was crying because I was feeling this very specific feeling of being too much for somebody. It’s a very strange feeling when you feel like you’re too much, or you’re taking up too much space, and I felt like nobody could ever love me for all that I am. … I feel everything so deeply, and that’s really what melodrama is about, is the depth of emotion.”
