Rachel Skarsten Didn't Know Which Character She Was Auditioning For During 'Batwoman' Auditions

Rachel Skarsten Didn't Know Which Character She Was Auditioning For During 'Batwoman' Auditions

Rachel Skarsten sits beside Meagan Tandy during the Batwoman panel during the 2019 New York Comic Con at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Sunday afternoon (October 6) in New York City.

The two stars of the new CW series chatted with fans about the new show, which premiered that same night.

Rachel spoke to Variety after the premiere, opening up about the reveal of just who Alice is – Beth, Kate’s long-lost (and presumed dead) twin sister.

She revealed that during her audition, Rachel didn’t know which character she was auditioning for, as the names on the sides had changed. After being cast, the showrunners let her in on Alice’s secret.

“I always say as an actor I want to know enough about my character — the bigger picture of my character — because of course that informs my decisions in the moment,” Rachel explained. “But I also like to not know some things — because we don’t know everything about the story of our lives as [it] unfolds.”

“I tried to play it as subtly as possible until the reveal, but obviously wanting to do it enough where, if you were looking back on it, you’d say, ‘Oh, there it is!’”

Rachel adds that Alice is “an incredibly talented but also intelligent individual” who is “very aware of everything she’s doing.”

Ruby Rose Calls Rachel Skarsten's Alice on 'Batwoman' a 'Sociopath'

Ruby Rose Calls Rachel Skarsten's Alice on 'Batwoman' a 'Sociopath'

Ruby Rose flashes her pearly whites while making an appearance at Build Series on Monday (September 30) in New York City.

The 33-year-old actress went on the show to chat about her upcoming new show Batwoman.

Ruby and her co-star Rachel Skarsten recently opened up about the character of Alice on the show, who essentially is similar to the Joker in Batman.

“She’s just ruthless. She’s a sociopath,” Ruby told EW. “What makes Alice so terrifying is that you can’t tell if she’s 100 percent bad or evil.”

“They’re both very, very strong, very independent, very intelligent, extremely capable, both intellectually and physically females,” Rachel added of both Alice and Batwoman. “So you have them on opposing sides, but you don’t know who can outwit the other, who can out-punch the other. It’s a toss-up. So I think that makes them amazing, amazing foes for one another. But then of course there is also some history that will come into it that I think complicates everything, but also feeds into them being great nemeses for each other.”

The Newest Promo For 'Batwoman' Has Us Very Curious About Rachel Skarsten's Alice - Watch Now!

The Newest Promo For 'Batwoman' Has Us Very Curious About Rachel Skarsten's Alice - Watch Now!

Rachel Skarsten is giving off some serious sinister vibes in this new promo for The CW’s Batwoman.

The former Reign actress plays Alice, the leader of the Wonderland gang in the upcoming series.

While Alice is the main villain in the new show, don’t expect her to be just like the Joker.

“I mean, no one can fill the shoes of the people who have played Joker before me. That’s insane. It would be crazy to try,” Rachel told CinemaBlend in a new interview. “And I always think that while imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I can flatter them in other ways.”

She continued that with Alice, she “wanted to create something that was my own. I will never be able to play The Joker the way those people did, but I can play Alice the way I play her, you know?”

“Yes, of course you look to those characters because Alice is to Batwoman what Joker is to Batman. But no, beyond that, I’ve sort of tried to create my own thing.”

Batwoman premieres Sunday, October 6th @ 8PM ET/PT on The CW.
