The Vampire Diaries' Michael Malarkey & Annie Wersching Open Up About Enzo & Lily's Connection (JJJ Interview)
With Lily (Annie Wersching) in charge and the Heretics in Mystic Falls, lines will inevitably be drawn on this season of The Vampire Diaries.
One person JJJ is most curious about is Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and where his loyalties lie.
“At the end of season six, we see that he’s sided with Lily and moved into the Salvatore house and at the top of the episode, we see there’s a little bit of a rewind,” Michael told JJJ during a recent set visit. “The first few episodes, we see him kind of grappling with that allegiance.”
So where does Enzo’s loyalty for Lily stem from exactly? And how far is he willing to go for her?
“My take on that is that she turned him, so he has that weird connection with her,” Michael said. “And I think he’s also kind of figuring out what that is. Is it something more than just feeling connected to someone? Is it a family thing? Where he’s at with it, he’s compelled to be with her in some way or another. All aspects of that are explored in some way.”
Annie told us, “To him, not only did she save his life, but he was abandoned at a young age and she’s really the first person in his life to show him kindness. I think there’s a deep connection there and it can play out in a few different ways. It’s actually a little surprising to Lily how it turns out.”
So, will this play out in a romantic way?

“We have a flash forward episode where we see he’s actually hooked up with someone on the show,” Michael said. “People are going to go nuts. After three long years, Enzo is getting a love interest.”
Finally! But, sadly for us, it’s not with Damon. Though, we wonder, where does their friendship stand today?
Michael said, “The thing with Damon is, Enzo has put himself on the line for Damon time and time again. So many times Damon has not been there for him, and I think he’s felt that over the past couple seasons. He killed the love of his life, for one. Left him to burn in a fire, for another. Those things add up for somebody. I think he’s a little bit over it at the moment, but we’ll see how it plays out.”
The Vampire Diaries premieres TONIGHT, October 8 @ 8PM on The CW.
