Hayley Kiyoko Spreads The Most Positive Message About Embracing Who She Is

Hayley Kiyoko steps out for the City of Hope: 15th Annual Songs of Hope event, a unique evening honoring songwriters and composers, on Thursday (September 19) in Sherman Oaks, Calif.

The “I Wish” musician was honored with the Facebook Songwriter Impact Award at the event, for her continued work in promoting acceptance and equality through her music.

Hayley is also appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show today and reflected about her fears of not being accepted in school because of her sexuality.

“My biggest weakness growing up was that I was gay and I was different from everyone else,” she shared. “I really feared growing up because I was like, life is going to be so difficult and people are just not going to understand, and going into my music career, I was just like, if I’m scared, everyone else will be. So, I have to embrace who I am, I have to be the brave one because if I take that first step, everyone else will follow.”

Hayley adds, “They will hopefully grow to feel inspired and know that they can have a good life. They don’t have to commit suicide, the don’t have to not love themselves, they can be loved. And it’s about all these incredible, powerful women, and just people in general, taking that first step and initiative to showcase that.”

Taylor Swift Says Lorde & Hayley Kiyoko Were Critics Before They Became Friends

Taylor Swift Says Lorde & Hayley Kiyoko Were Critics Before They Became Friends

Taylor Swift is opening up about how her friendships with Lorde and Hayley Kiyoko happened after they publicly criticized her.

The “You Need To Calm Down” crooner shared her thoughts in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

“Some of my best friendships came from people publicly criticizing me and then it opening up a conversation,” Taylor said. “Hayley Kiyoko was doing an interview and she made an example about how I get away with singing about straight relationships and people don’t give me s–t the way they give her s–t for singing about girls — and it’s totally valid.”

“Like, Ella — Lorde — the first thing she ever said about me publicly was a criticism of my image or whatever,” Taylor continued. “But I can’t really respond to someone saying, ‘You, as a human being, are fake.’ And if they say you’re playing the victim, that completely undermines your ability to ever verbalize how you feel unless it’s positive.”

“So, OK, should I just smile all the time and never say anything hurts me?” Taylor Swift added. “Because that’s really fake. Or should I be real about how I’m feeling and have valid, legitimate responses to things that happened to me in my life? But wait, would that be playing the victim?”

Hayley Kiyoko Opens Up About How Putting a Label On Her Sexuality Helped So Many Others

Hayley Kiyoko Opens Up About How Putting a Label On Her Sexuality Helped So Many Others

Hayley Kiyoko rocks a cool double denim look for Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter’s Pride Summit on Thursday (August 8) in West Hollywood, Calif.

The 28-year-old “I Wish” singer and musician is one of the cover stars of Billboard‘s latest issue, where she opened up about how putting a label on her sexuality helped so many others.

“I didn’t want a label at all, but once I released my music, there was this out pour of support for the fact that I did like girls,” Hayley recalled. “I learned that by embracing my label as a lesbian, I was helping normalize that for so many other people.”

She also spoke about her queer activism, saying that “sometimes you get overwhelmed: I’m not doing enough, I’m not saying enough. I just focus on keeping people alive.”

“If you can inspire hope and give light when people are in that darkness, they will help you make this world a better place.”

Hayley is also pictured with rising artist, Ximone, at Bumble’s “Empowered by Bumble Bizz” campaign at Lollapalooza last weekend.
