They will also share anecdotes of memorable holidays from their childhoods, best – and most embarrassing! – presents, favorite traditions, family photos and poignant New Year’s resolutions.
In addition, Joshua is set to debut an acoustic version of an original song which he wrote for season two!
“The holidays remind us of the universal importance of family and loved ones,” creator Tim Federle said. “The cast of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ is its own kind of family, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to share their favorite holiday music and traditions with our viewers.”
The soundtrack for the holiday special will be available starting November 20th and the special itself will premiere on December 11th on Disney+!
One particular moment that stands out is Joshua Bassett admitting that he never actually watched the dressing room scene with Olivia Rodrigo in the finale.
“I haven’t actually watched this. I haven’t watched it,” he says. “What’s crazy is seeing people holding up the laptop and saying it word for word, like perfect. I’m like wow, that is dedication.”
Matt Cornett said that everybody in hair and makeup was sobbing while Joshua and Olivia were filming that scene and trying to stay quiet because they were close by.
Joshua also shared that before the last take, showrunner Tim Federle pulled him aside and told him to just improvise and say what he thought Ricky would say, and that’s what they used!
The Disney+ series picked up the 2020 GLAAD Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming, in a tie with Hulu’s The Bravest Knight.
“Congrats to cast, crew, writers and directors of #HSMTMTS â¤ï¸ðŸ³ï¸â€ðŸŒˆ,” HSMTMTS creator Tim Federle wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to @timfederle and @disneyplus for championing our show, and for helping so many people feel less alone! you were born to be brave baby!!!” Joshua Bassett wrote on Instagram story.

“During this era of political and cultural division, LGBTQ images in media are crucial in accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community and countering the dangerous rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric,†GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, said in a statement. “This year’s award recipients, including Pose and Schitt’s Creek, continue to bring necessary mainstream visibility to diverse voices within the LGBTQ community, ultimately raising the bar for LGBTQ inclusion and representation in media.â€
Congratulations to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and all the other GLAAD Awards winners!!
Zac Efron joined the High School Musical cast on the Disney Family Singalong on Thursday night (April 16), though he sadly didn’t sing with them.
The cast reunited to perform the smash hit song “We’re All in This Together” from their own homes. Zac is supposedly quarantined in the “middle of nowhere” with poor WiFi, but he sent in a grainy video that served as an introduction to the performance.
“Hi everyone, I hope that you’re safe and that you’re healthy and that you’re doing as well as possible during these unprecedented times. It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends, and some new ones. I hope that you enjoy, and remember, we’re all in this together,” Zac said. He unfortunately didn’t sing with the cast, but you can watch the performance below!
The 19-year-old HSMTMTS star says that he was one of the first people Olivia showed the song to and revealed how she originally felt about the song.
“I was one of the first people to hear it. She showed her mom and then she showed me. And I remember her saying something like, ‘It’s terrible! I’m going to start from scratch!’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about? This is perfect! This is incredible!’ I was blown away,” Joshua said on Build Series.
He continued, “And of course, it’s like the number one song of the show and a massive hit! And I’m like, ‘Of course it’s a massive hit. I knew that from the time you played it.’ I can’t imagine a world where she was like, ‘Eh I’m going to start from scratch.’”
