The cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series get ready for opening night in this still from the brand new episode, now airing on Disney+!

In “Opening Night”, after months of rehearsals, the theater kids gear up for an unforgettable opening night. But when unexpected audience members show up to shake the cast to its core, will the show “go on” if the Wildcats aren’t all in this together?

“There’s a whole lot of chaos and it’s nothing that you’d expect to happen. Expect the unexpected is all I’ll say, really. It’s all over the place in the best ways,” Joshua Bassett said about the episode. “There are a lot of exciting payoffs and a lot of interesting twists and I think people are really going to enjoy the ride.”

“I think Rini stans are really going to want to watch episodes nine and 10,” Olivia Rodrigo teased. “I think they’re really going to love it.”

In addition to recreating scenes from the original movie, along with the music, Olivia and Joshua co-wrote an original song “Just For a Moment”, which you can listen to right here.

Joshua Bassett & Olivia Rodrigo Dish On Co-Writing a Song For 'High School Musical' Series

Joshua Bassett & Olivia Rodrigo Dish On Co-Writing a Song For 'High School Musical' Series

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-stars Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo got to write an original song together for the show!

The two stars recently opened up about about getting the chance to co-write “Just For A Moment” for the upcoming ninth episode.

“We were all in the East High Theater and Tim Federle, the creator of the show, approached Olivia and I and said, ‘Hey, I know this is a wild idea — it’s very early in the process — but there might be a slot where you two could submit a song. There are no promises, but I just want to plant the seed in your head now,’” Joshua told ET. “So Olivia and I literally turned around that minute, I grabbed my guitar, we sat down and we just started pumping out ideas. Writing it down, everything we could think of and then we’d come back every five minutes and say, ‘I thought of this.’”

“We got the news a few weeks later [that it was chosen], which was just the most surreal thing in the world,” he added. “When it actually happened, I think it was kind of a shock to both of us, but it was really neat. I think it was both of our first times being legitimized as songwriters professionally, because we’ve been both writing on our own. And to actually have that on paper, to be able to prove that we did that was just a dream come true.”

“It was strange because we wrote the song before we filmed episode nine. We didn’t totally know what was going on with the characters when we wrote it, but our showrunner, creator Tim Federle walked us through what was going on with the characters. It’s a really special experience because to write a song for the characters is amazing, because I feel like nobody is going to know the character as well as we do. No one’s going to know Ricky like Josh knows Ricky, and no one’s going to know Nini like I know Nini,” Olivia added. “We were there for their creation, we make them who they are and we’re literally living their lives all the time.”

“To get to write from that perspective was really great, and I think the song turned out better because we had that background knowledge,” she went on. “I’m so inspired by Josh and I think he’s such a great songwriter, and to co-write with him was really a wonderful experience. It’s something I wouldn’t trade for the world.”

Lucas Grabeel Opens Up About Not Labeling Ryan Evans' Sexual Orientation in Original 'HSM' Movies

Lucas Grabeel Opens Up About Not Labeling Ryan Evans' Sexual Orientation in Original 'HSM' Movies

Lucas Grabeel has made his return to the world of High School Musical on Disney+’s HSM: The Musical: The Series, and in a new interview with TVLine, opening up about the impact of Ryan Evans on the world.

“People have always asked me if Ryan was gay,” the now 35-year-old actor shared. “I’ve seen a lot of performances from the tours or high schools or community theaters, and they always take Ryan to that place of being way over the top. That’s fine, but that’s not exactly the way I played it.”

Lucas continues, “I had a lot of talks with [director Kenny Ortega] about his own experience in high school. He was not out, and he wasn’t running around being that way, but he had that energy inside of him. It’s such an important time in your life, and you’re figuring so many things out. Now, thankfully, people are much more accepting and welcoming of other people’s differences.”

Ryan, Lucas says, was still figuring things out in the original movies, like more teenagers are.

“Ryan was a guy who was really excited about theater and art and dance choreography and bright colors and hats,” he says. “But he also liked Kelsey, and he really liked [Zeke]. He didn’t need a label, because he wasn’t ready for that. He was still learning about himself and about people and where he fit into the world.”

“I didn’t mean for it to be a giant statement,” Lucas adds. “I actually wanted to be kind of subtle. I wanted to add nuance and little things that you might catch the second or third time you see the movies. I wanted people to think, ‘That character’s more complex than I thought,’ instead of saying, ‘Oh, he comes out in pink and you know he’s gay.’ That’s not what we had in mind. We had a lot of fun with putting in all those little nuances along the way.”
