Perry Mattfeld Says Dog Levi Is The True Star of 'In The Dark'

Hands down – the cutest star of In The Dark has to be Levi, who plays guide dog Pretzel.

Perry Mattfeld, who plays Murphy on the series, opened up about working with the golden retriever.

“I’m so in love with that dog, as is everyone,” she shared. “I was saying before that there’s times in the pilot you see where Murphy’s a little rough with her dog, so when we would cut I would pull her aside and tell her, ‘You’re so talented and we love having you here and you bring so much depth to the character.’”

Perry added that having Levi “is so brilliant and so talented. People think their own dog is cute and smart until you see that dog.”

“When we’re rolling, our trainer, Vee, she can’t always give vocal cues to the dogs, so she has to give a lot of cues from off camera that are just visual cues with her hands,” she continued. “Levi can respond to those and put her head down and roll or speak with just a visual cue from the trainer, Vee, without a vocal cue. So, she’s perfect.”

“She’s the star of the show. Levi is really the star of the show and I have no problem with that.”

In The Dark premieres TONIGHT @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.

'In The Dark' Star Perry Mattfeld Dishes On How She Prepared To Play a Blind Person on New CW Show

Perry Mattfeld‘s new show, In The Dark, is just hours away from its’ premiere on The CW.

The 25-year-old actress is opening up with Coming Soon about how the series spoke to her and how she prepared to play a blind person.

“When I first read the script I flew through it. That’s how I usually judge if a project speaks to me, based on how quickly I get through the scripts. If I struggle and I have to go back and keep trying to figure out who’s who…but something with In the Dark, I flew through it,” Perry says of her connection to the show.

She adds that she “laughed and then I got teary-eyed. I felt a lot. And then this character of Murphy was something that I was dying to try because it was an emotional, mental, and a physical aspect as well.”

Perry also talked about portraying a blind person on television, despite not being blind herself.

“The show is loosely inspired by our blind consultant, Lorri Bernson. Before starting production I spent a lot of time with Lorri in her house watching her [during] her night routine, morning routine. Watching her brush her teeth, cook in her kitchen, watching her send emails or work with her guide dog, just so I could get a grasp of her physicality,” she shared.

Perry continues, “On set, the director would explain the blocking and then I’d watch her do the blocking, and then I’d try to mimic exactly how she moved through the space. Getting to work with Calle [Walton] and have scenes with her were some of our most fun scenes as well.

“I think upon getting the role I understood how much responsibility I have and how much I was gonna get to learn as well. The fact that the creators used the opportunity to surround the project with a lot of authenticity is something to be really proud of.”

Here's Why Perry Mattfield Was Cast as a Blind Woman Over An Actual Blind Woman For CW's 'In The Dark'

Perry Mattfeld dolls up in a pretty dress for the In The Dark panel during the 2019 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour held at The Langham Huntington Hotel on Thursday (January 31) in Pasadena, Calif.

The 24-year-old actress was joined by co-stars Casey Deidrick, Keston John, Kathleen York, Morgan Krantz, Rich Sommer, Brooke Markham, Calle Walton and Thamela Mpumlwana at the panel, as well as EPs Corinne Kingsbury, and Jackie Cohn, and consultant Lorri Benson.

During the panel, Lorri and Corinne explained why both Perry and dog Levi were cast instead of an actual blind actress and guide dog for the series.

Lorri, who is blind and came to TCA with her new-ish guide dog Captain who led her through maze of chairs on stage set up for the cast and producers, a guide dog would mis-interpret multiple takes of a scene in a bad way.

“If I were to repeat what I just did, even three or four times, when I repeat it’s because he made an error,” she explained. “He would slowly break down because he did not know what he was doing wrong.”

As for Perry, the EPs revealed that she was cast as Murphy because she was the best actor for the role “in a really exiting way”.

The series did hire Calle, who is blind, in another role on the series as well as a blind writer.

If you remember, Perry actually played Franken-girl in Wizards of Waverly Place!
