Joshua Bassett Opens Up About Removing Sabrina Carpenter Duet From EP

Joshua Bassett Opens Up About Removing Sabrina Carpenter Duet From EP

Joshua Bassett is speaking out about no longer releasing his upcoming duet with Sabrina Carpenter on his debut EP.

The 20-year-old HSMTMTS star opened up about the decision in a new interview with Billboard.

Joshua told the site that both he and Sabrina were “super excited” about the song, but in the end, “it was a very much a mutual conversation about what is best right now for everybody and this whole situation.”

“I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make,” Joshua added. “I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter. You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [‘We Both Know’] has a better chance at a different time.”

Joshua and Sabrina‘s song “We Both Know” was originally supposed to be the 5th song on the EP, but has been replaced with the track “Telling Myself.” Sabrina even teased the duet earlier this month.

The self titled EP will be out on March 12th.

“First, I was in disbelief — [I was] mostly proud of Olivia,” he told Billboard about the sketch. “The fact that they were using her song in a sketch, I was like, ‘This is great. This is incredible!’”

“I was like, ‘I think I’m honored?’” he added about when the mentioned him. “They poke fun at everyone and everything. That’s the point of the show. I thought it was hilarious.”

Sabrina Carpenter Talks 'Skin' & Including the 'Blonde' Lyric In Her Song

Sabrina Carpenter is diving more into her song “Skin” in a new interview!

The 21-year-old singer and actress opened up on the Zach Sang Show and talked all about her latest track.

“I would say session to finished product, I worked on it for a couple of days. I mean, I wrote the song in one day, but I then went back and kind of worked on it, production wise and lyrically a little bit,” Sabrina shared. “Kind of everything was happening at once, you know. It was the song, it was the mix, it was the master, it was the video. It was everything, which was a new experience for me.”

“I had so much respect for the way Taylor Swift put out her albums this year, and she wrote when she put out folklore, she was like, ‘Yeah, I mean we’re living in such uncertain times right now, that it’s like you just don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, so you might as well just do what you feel in the moment,” she continued. “And this was kind of one of those situations where I felt inspired to do that. So thanks Tay Tay.”

Sabrina also opened up about people believing what they want to believe about the song, and more, including why she referenced the blonde lyric from Olivia Rodrigo‘s “drivers license.”

“Because I guess people care, and I was like curious as to why people cared,” she said. “But I also think again, it’s like people are pointing fingers, but at the same time, like it’s not for me to say who is or it isn’t about, ’cause it’s not my story. That’s not my narrative. I’m just approaching it from you know, again, the attention that people kind of directed towards me, assuming that it was me. That I was just like well, you know, it does make sense, I am blonde.”

“I think I came at it from a very honest place of saying like, I don’t think anyone meant any hard feelings, and I don’t think that that’s what it is about. We’re all just telling our truth and we’re all just trying to feel okay within our own situations, which are so unique because we’re all experiencing life from completely different perspectives at different points in our life, with different people surrounding us,” she continues. “My situation is not one that everyone’s going through, so I understand that some people won’t see it from that side of things, and that’s okay.”

Sabrina Carpenter Teases Joshua Bassett Collab, Addresses Online Drama

Sabrina Carpenter is talking all things music!

The 21-year-old “Skin” singer just addressed all the drama surrounding her song, Olivia Rodrigo‘s track and Joshua Bassett.

“That was probably why it was one of the things I’ve been most nervous to put out, but that was also something exciting about it,” Sabrina told Radio.com. “There’s only so many times in life when we really get to write about what’s affecting us in the moment… I think in this situation, a lot of people have probably felt that way.”

“It’s such a struggle not to be able to control the narrative and know that whether you say something or whether you don’t say something, people are gonna be mad at you either way. People are probably not going to be pleased with whatever you say or don’t say,” she added. “It’s really just one of those things where you have to kind of to do for yourself at the end of the day and do it in the hopes that someone can find inspiration in the message.”

See what she previously said about the song and the speculation.

“At the end of the day, the more I dance around the subject, the less people kind of understand where I’m coming from. Not that the goal is to get them to understand, ‘cause I don’t think at the end of the day you’re ever going to accomplish that,” Sabrina added about the drama. “But the more honest I could be in that moment, and that fact is, exactly what I said, it wasn’t a call out to one person.”

“That situation is a situation, and plenty of other things have happened in this past year alone in my life that I was like, ‘it’s getting to be a lot,’ and I need to compile these thoughts into one place, and into one message that I can kind of come full circle with and constantly remind myself that people can only get to you if you allow them to,” she continued.

Sabrina also shared a little tease about her upcoming collaboration with Joshua, which will be on his upcoming EP.

“I can’t say too much, and it’s on his project, so I don’t want to say too much that I can’t say. It’s a collaboration very dear to my heart that I’m excited about, and we did it a while ago now,” she shared.

Sabrina Carpenter's 'Skin' Lyrics Match Up to Lines From 'Girl Meets World'

Sabrina Carpenter's 'Skin' Lyrics Match Up to Lines From 'Girl Meets World'

Some of the lyrics in Sabrina Carpenter‘s new song “Skin” are getting major attention!

While many speculate that the song is a direct response to Olivia Rodrigo‘s track “drivers license,” the 21-year-old turned down those rumors in a new Instagram post where she directly mentioned Olivia‘s song.

Now, a viral TikTok video is pointing out that some of the lyrics in both of their songs actually line up almost perfectly with some lines from Sabrina‘s Disney Channel show Girl Meets World.

The episode in the video is from season one, titled, “Girl Meets 1961,” where Cory gives the class a living-history assignment.

In the episode, Riley (Rowan Blanchard) reads from a poem called “The Girl With The Long, Blonde Hair.”

“We could have been friends, maybe in some other life,” she says.

Sabrina starts off her song with the line, “Maybe we could’ve been friends, if I met you in another life,” and in Olivia‘s song, she mentions “And you’re probably with that blonde girl.”

Sabrina Carpenter Sets the Record Straight If Her Song 'Skin' is About Olivia Rodrigo

Sabrina Carpenter Sets the Record Straight If Her Song 'Skin' is About Olivia Rodrigo

Sabrina Carpenter is breaking her silence amid the ongoing social media drama.

The 21-year-old singer took to her Instagram on Sunday night (January 24) to share a message about her new song “Skin,” while addressing speculation that she wrote the song as a response to Olivia Rodrigo‘s song “Driver’s License.”

Here’s some background info: fans came up with the theory that the 17-year-old singer/actress wrote “Driver’s License” about Sabrina and her current boyfriend Joshua Bassett, who is Olivia‘s co-star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Olivia sings in her song, “and you’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt.”

When Sabrina released her song “Skin,” many fans believed she was dissing Olivia, specifically with the lyrics, “Maybe then we could pretend / There’s no gravity in the words we write / Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme.”

Sabrina is now explaining why she wrote “Skin,” while specifically addressing Olivia‘s song.

Olivia has also weighed in on the fan speculation about “Driver’s License.” You can read what she said here.
