'The Bold Type' Producers Respond To Star Aisha Dee's Call For Changes Behind The Scenes

Aisha Dee took a page from her character Kat’s playbook and spoke out publicly about the need for changes on The Bold Type!

In a lengthy post, the 26-year-old actress called for more diversity behind-the-scenes and even criticized her character’s recent storyline.

“By speaking out, I’m taking a risk. It’s scary, but it’s wroth it,” she concluded her post. “This is not judgment. This is a call to action. We deserve to see stories that are for us, by us.”

Now, the producing companies of The Bold Type, Freeform and Universal TV, are responding to Aisha‘s call for action.

“We applaud Aisha for raising her hand and starting conversations around these important issues,” they said in a statement, via THR. “We look forward to continuing that dialogue and enacting positive change. Our goal on The Bold Type is and has always been to tell entertaining, authentic stories that are representative of the world that Kat, Jane and Sutton live in — we can only do that if we listen.”

Aisha Dee Criticizes Her Character Kat's New Relationship on 'The Bold Type'

Aisha Dee is sharing her concerns about The Bold Type.

The 26-year-old actress took to Instagram on Wednesday (July 15) to channel her character Kat to bring to light the lack of diversity behind the cameras on her Freeform show.

“I’m ready to take a cue from my girl Kat. What would Kat do? She would take a stand and advocate for herself and all other marginalized voices to influence change,” Aisha wrote. “I am ready to push harder and speak louder for what matters to me: The diversity we see in front of the camera needs to be reflected in the diversity of the creative team behind the camera.”

Aisha continued: “It took two seasons to get a single BIPOC in the writers’ room for ‘The Bold Type.’ And even then, the responsibility to speak for the entire Black experience cannot and should not fall on one person. We got to tell a story about a queer Black woman and a lesbian Muslim woman falling in love, but there have never been any queer Black or Muslim writers in the room. In four seasons (48 episodes) we’ve had one Black woman direct two episodes.”

She then went on to criticize the “inconsistent” storylines of queer characters and characters of color.

“The level of care, nuance, and development that has gone into the stories centering white hetero characters is inconsistent with the stories centering queer characters and POC,” Aisha wrote. “I do not believe this is intentional. We cannot bring specificity and honesty to experiences we have not lived. And when there is a lack of representation, the way marginalized characters are treated is even more important because they have the potential to empower or perpetuate damaging stereotypes that have lasting and real effect on people.”

Aisha then addressed the problem she has with her character’s new relationship. In the last episode, Kat, who is an outspoken advocate for various liberal causes, entered into a relationship with a white, conservative, Republican woman who has a completely different set of morals than she does.

“The decision to have Kat enter into a relationship with a privileged conservative women felt confusing and out of character,” Aisha explained. “Despite my personal feelings about the choice, I tried my best to tell the story with honesty, even though the Kat I known and love would never make these choices. It was heartbreaking to watch Kat’s story turn into a redemption story for someone else, some who is complicit in the oppression of so many. Someone who’s politics are actively harmful to her communities.”

Aisha explained her decision to speak out about her show, saying that she’s ready to see change.

“I’m critical because I care, because I’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact of this show, and I believe in its potential to be better,” Aisha wrote. “‘The Bold Type’ has done so much food, but it struggles to understand the intersections man of its characters live in.”

After publishing the post, Aisha‘s co-stars Katie Stevens and Meghann Fahy showed their support by sharing her post on their own Instagram accounts.

The season four finale of The Bold Type airs on Thursday, July 16 on Freeform at 10pm ET.

The Bold Type fans: Get ready for an emotional midseason finale!

The cast took the stage for their panel at the 2020 SCAD aTVfest on Friday (February 28) in Atlanta.

Matt Ward, Katie Stevens, Sam Page, Meghann Fahy, and Stephen Conrad Moore were all in attendance.

“It’s so hard because I can’t say much about why it’s emotional without ruining, but there are a lot of life changes going on for our characters,” Katie told EW about the midseason finale, titled “Stardust” and airing on March 12.

In that episode, fans will get to meet Jane’s brother Evan (Glee‘s Chord Overstreet).

“I’ve actually known Chord for many years so it was really exciting that he was a part of the show, and you just kind of get to see where Jane comes from,” Katie said. “She has an also type-A brother who is a bit of perfectionist and you can see kind of how that plays into their relationship and also the dynamic between my brother and Ryan.”

Sam Page also opened up about how Richard and Sutton are doing with their wedding planning: “We’re progressing at a pretty quick pace and that pace comes back in discussion — How fast we’re moving, and are we moving to fast? Because their lives are changing so fast. Richard’s got a job in San Francisco that’s demanding more and more of his time to be there, but his relationship with Sutton is progressing toward a wedding, and her job is getting bigger and better all the time. So we’re kind of working on a clock there.”
