Many fans were shocked by the death, and showrunner Jason Rothenberg took to social media to defend the decision.

“For 7 seasons, The 100 has been a show about the dark things that humanity will do to survive and the toll those deeds take on our heroes’ souls,” he wrote. “We knew Bellamy’s death had to go to the heart of what the show was all about: Survival. Who you’re willing to protect. And who you’re willing to sacrifice.”

“His loss is devastating, but his life and his endless love for his people will loom large and affect everything that comes after, to the very end of the series finale itself,” Jason added. “We thank Bob for his beautiful work over these long years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Bob Morley Directs Tonight's Episode of 'The 100'

Bob Morley is stepping behind the camera on tonight’s all-new The 100.

In “Ashes to Ashes”, siblings Bellamy (Morley) and Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) must work together to save their friends. Meanwhile, Echo (Tasya Teles) is forced to face her past.

Tasya spoke to TV Guide about being directed by Bob for the episode: “At first I was more worried about Bob, and then I became more worried about myself.

“There [were] a few really intense emotional breakdowns in that episode for Echo, so I just really wanted to make sure that I was prepared and that I could come and show up for Bob and we could squeeze out whatever he needed,” she continued. “I’ve known Bob for so long, and he’s kind of like an older brother to me, and we’ve worked together so much, so it was so great to work in that capacity.”

Tasya adds, “It was so fitting that he would be the one who ended up with Echo’s backstory, so that was really sweet, and he did a really good job.”

The 100 airs TONIGHT, July 23rd @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.
