To celebrate her birthday, Disney+ dropped the trailer for Stargirl, the 16-year-old singer’s acting debut.

Grace VanderWaal Reveals 'Stargirl' & 'Waste My Time' Life Lessons

Grace VanderWaal Reveals 'Stargirl' & 'Waste My Time' Life Lessons

Grace VanderWaal is sharing the life lessons she’s learned from her new movie Stargirl and her new single “Waste My Time.”

The 15-year-old singer got candid in a new interview with Teen Vogue. Here’s what she had to say:

On her character Stargirl: “She is so unapologetically herself and it’s ridiculous because she’s so young. Stargirl is not afraid of anyone, of doing her own thing. She understands the concept that no one cares — or at least people don’t care as much as you think they do.”

On writing “Waste My Time”: “What I like about it is that it has a really nice contrast of kind of messed up lyrics, but it’s fun at the same time. That’s a feeling I really wanted to portray. Like when things are messed up, people say you shouldn’t waste your time, you only have one shot. You’re only young once. This is a song [that says], whatever, I don’t care, I’ll waste it.”

On figuring out what she wants to do with her life: “I was freaking out for a second, and I was being so overdramatic, and I was psyching myself out so much. Looking back … [I think I felt like] if I don’t choose this, then the opportunities won’t come back. And if I choose this then the time won’t come back. I was battling between those two things. But now, current Grace, present Grace, I’m just like, ‘Past Grace, chill. It doesn’t even matter that much. You’re just psyching yourself out.’ Now I’m just literally going day by day, whatever happens, happens.”

“Honestly, as long as I’m doing what I love, I’m happy. And right now I’m doing what I love and that’s all that matters. And if in a couple of months I don’t want to do this, whatever. I’ll go back to school. And if I do want to do it, well let’s [see what] we can build. If not, it’ll be hard, but you know, I’ll figure it out. I always figure something out.”

Grace VanderWaal Talks Playing the Lead in 'Stargirl'!

Grace VanderWaal is making her acting debut!

The 15-year-old singer is set to star in the highly-anticipated Stargirl adaptation for Disney’s new streaming service, which is due out next year.

Grace rose to super-stardom in 2016 when she won America’s Got Talent at the young age of 12 and earned comparison to superstars like Taylor Swift in the process.

The “Stray” singer calls her turn to acting “nerve-racking,” – particularly considering Stargirl’s massive built-in fanbase.

“It’s super pressuring, because I know also how people are with books,” she told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “They want it to be like [how they were imagining], so I’m like, ‘What if I’m not like Stargirl?’”

Stargirl will be released in 2020.

Grace VanderWaal Wraps Filming on Her First Movie, 'Stargirl'

Grace VanderWaal is officially done filming her first ever movie!

The 14-year-old singer and now actress shared a sweet message to her co-stars and crew after wrapping up shooting on Stargirl, where she stars as the title character.

“I genuinely with all my heart have no idea how to even explain these past couple months of my life,” Grace started out on her Instagram. “I always thought I was missing something. I gave up trying to make friends or even have a conversation because I was so incredibly exhausted from giving my all, trying my best to connect with people and never succeeding.”

“I was nervous about making this movie because I knew a lot of the cast would be around my age and that scared me,” she continues. “I am new. I am genuinely a different, better version of myself coming out of this. I am so sad and still drying my eyes about it ending but also incredibly grateful for what this has done for me.”

Grace added at the end, “I’m normal, I’m not missing anything, I just needed love and acceptance to gain some social confidence. Thank you. Thank you to my now lifelong friends.”

Stargirl is set to premiere in 2019.

Grace VanderWaal Squeals With Excitement About Her First Movie Role in 'Stargirl'

Grace VanderWaal Squeals With Excitement About Her First Movie Role in 'Stargirl'

Just last month, it was announced that Grace VanderWaal would be starring in Disney’s upcoming Stargirl.

The film, based on Jerry Spinelli‘s book of the same name, centers on Leo Borlock, who follows the unspoken rule at Mica Area High School: don’t stand out–under any circumstances! Then Stargirl arrives at Mica High and everything changes–for Leo and for the entire school.

After 15 years of home schooling, Stargirl bursts into tenth grade in an explosion of color and a clatter of ukulele music, enchanting the Mica student body.

Grace recently spoke with ET Canada about her first ever acting role.

“I am so excited!” she exclaimed. “I have never auditioned for anything. I did the lines, it was really weird, but it was comfortable once it started rolling.”

Grace added that she was very confident in her audition afterwards, “I was pretty sure that I got it because I felt that she [casting director] really liked me. But I didn’t know, because I’d never auditioned for anything. But [then], I did and I’m so excited about it.”
