Elizabeth Gillies Explains 'Dynasty' Reboot's 'Gossip Girl' Comparisons

Elizabeth Gillies Explains 'Dynasty' Reboot's 'Gossip Girl' Comparisons

Elizabeth Gillies is spilling more details on her upcoming drama series Dynasty!

The reboot of the 1980s show hails from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and it follows two of America’s wealthiest families as they feud for control over their fortune and their children.

Elizabeth feels her character Fallon Carrington shares both similarities and differences with Gossip Girl‘s Blair Waldorf.

“There are parallels within the characters,” Elizabeth told Teen Vogue. “Don’t try to compare me to [Leighton Meester], because I might not live up to everyone’s expectations of being as good as Blair Waldorf. She’s a legend.”

“Fallon acts like a 50-year-old woman most of the time, where Blair, I think, was mature for her age, but very much her age,” she continued. “That’s one thing I think will separate us. Thank god, because they’re big shoes to fill.”

“There’s a beautiful chance to escape in our show, because these characters live such a decadent life,” Liz shared, adding, “These families, the Carringtons and Colbys, there’s nothing that they can’t get. There’s nothing that they don’t have, but they’re not happy. They want to escape in this beautiful world of champagne, and private jets, but when the lights go down, and all the characters are alone in their rooms at the end of the night, the dysfunction is still there.”

Don’t miss Dynasty when it premieres on October 11 on The CW!

Premiering next month, Dynasty centers on Fallon, who is poised to become the new COO of her father’s global energy empire – or so she thinks.

When her father, Blake Carrington (Show) summons Fallon and her brother, Steven (James Mackay), home to the family compound in Atlanta, Fallon is horrified to learn that the reunion isn’t to announce her promotion – but rather to make the acquaintance of stepmother-to-be, Cristal (Kelley).

Elizabeth Gillies Gets Vicious on First Posters For New Show 'Dynasty'

Elizabeth Gillies and Nathalie Kelly are not holding back their hate for one another on this new poster for their upcoming show, Dynasty.

The show centers on Fallon (Gillies), the charismatic, cunning, and poised to become the new COO of her father’s global energy empire – or so she thinks.

When her father, Blake Carrington (Grant Show), summons Fallon and her brother, Steven, home in Atlanta, Fallon is horrified to learn that the reunion isn’t to announce her promotion – but rather to make the acquaintance of their stepmother-to-be, Cristal (Kelly).

Family dynasties flow through blood, and Fallon would sooner draw blood than call Cristal “Mom.”

Dynasty will premiere Wednesday, October 11th on The CW. If you missed the first-look trailer, watch on JJJ now!

A 'Victorious' Reboot or Reunion Isn't Out Of The Question At All, Elizabeth Gillies Says

A 'Victorious' Reboot or Reunion Isn't Out Of The Question At All, Elizabeth Gillies Says

One of the saddest moments we can remember was learning that Victorious had been cancelled by Nickelodeon, which ended in 2013 with only three seasons.

However, Elizabeth Gillies hints that a reunion isn’t totally out of the question at all.

“Yeah, I’m down. We’re all down,” Liz shared with TV Guide this week.

UM, YES!!!!

“They will be my friends forever…We’re very close,” she says, giving us so much hope about an actual reunion one day. “We still have a group text that we talk into and we share news with each other.”

Liz adds, “[The show] ended four years ago and we still are as close as ever so it’s beautiful. I [have] only positive memories from that show.”

So, let’s make this happen already!

New 'Dynasty' Reboot with Elizabeth Gillies Flips Races & Genders

New 'Dynasty' Reboot with Elizabeth Gillies Flips Races & Genders

Elizabeth Gillies is all smiles up on stage with Sam Adegoke during the 2017 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour on Wednesday (August 2) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Almost the entire cast flew back from Atlanta, where they film Dynasty, to chat with press about how the reboot is different from the original series which aired in the 1980s.

The producers actually changed Jeff Colby (Adegoke), traditionally a white rich man who would marry Fallon (Gillies), to an African-American tech billionaire.

“It’s not just that he’s African-American, but he’s new money,” showrunner Josh Schwartz shared. “In the old version, the Carringtons were nouveau riche compared to the Colbys. We are flipping that dynamic.”

He adds, “Jeff is a tech billionaire who honed what was going to make him a billionaire while he worked for Blake. That’s a point of resentment for Blake. So that allows us a lot more dynamic storytelling.”

Elizabeth Gillies Doesn't Want Original 'Dynasty' Fans To Hate Her Fallon Carrington In The Reboot

Elizabeth Gillies Doesn't Want Original 'Dynasty' Fans To Hate Her Fallon Carrington In The Reboot

Elizabeth Gillies knows all about the world of reboots, so it’s understandable that she’s just a little cautious about her new show Dynasty.

In an interview with Zach Sang, Liz revealed that her Fallon Carrington will be a bit different from the original Fallon Cartwright.

“I did watch a lot of the original Dynasty before hand, because we’re remaking something and I don’t want people to hate me,” Liz says. “When you do a reboot, there’s a really good chance that the OGs who grew up with it, are going to be ‘ugh’ and roll their eyes at it.”

She adds, “My goal is to create a character that pays…I want to pay tribute to her but I still want to recreate her so that it’s not a direct comparison, because people were in love with the original characters.”

Liz also recommends watching at least some of the original series, but don’t be expecting the reboot to be exactly the same.

“If you watch the original Dynasty, it’s fabulous, but it was very much of that time,” she says. “You’ll listen to things they say and you’ll be like ‘That could never be said now’. We have to modernize and update it and we have.”
