‘Shadowhunters’ Fans Did Everything Right To Try & Save The Series, Showrunners Say

The Save Shadowhunters fan campaign kicked off mere moments after Freeform announced its' cancellation.

It's still going strong too - with fans still campaigning for any other network or streaming service to pick up the series.

Showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer are opening up with ET about the campaign and praising for the fans for their efforts.

"I think it’s the end of Shadowhunters in this permutation. Those books live on and the rights live on. Darren and I don’t have the rights and we don't control the rights. I think we’re all kind of going onto other things, but having said that – you never say never," Todd says about bringing the series back.

Darren added, "The only reason that it seems like it would be a long shot to [continue this show] in this permutation is that everything has been disassembled. The sets have been sold, and all the props, and that stuff [is gone.] It’s not like we could ever come back and just continue it where it is. It would be starting from scratch."

"The fans did everything right," he continued.

Todd added, "It’s an incredibly passionate, creative, strong fandom that should be so proud of themselves because this won't be forgotten and it’s bigger than a TV show. What this fandom is preaching is inclusion, and love for all, and all these positive things in life and I think that’s a rarity. I think that will go down in history."

Katherine McNamara Shares More Things She Took From The ‘Shadowhunters’ Set

At the end of Shadowhunters, Katherine McNamara was gifted a very special item from the set.

The "small, wooden art piece from Clary's bedroom" which was signed by the camera crew and is very dear to the 23-year-old actress - but there are a few other items that she took from the set, too.

"I was lucky enough I ended up with a couple pairs of shoes, couple jackets. I have a set of her swords, which is a lot of fun," Kat shared with IBT.

She adds, "Because I loved fighting with the kindjals, having a set of my own that I used on the show is pretty great. We’ve been through a lot, those kindjals and me. I think they’re still wrapped in the bubble wrap. I’m kind of scared to take it out."

Katherine also revealed that she kept the slate from the last take of the last shot of the series.

"Our wonderful Director of Photography, Mike McMurray, he gave me the slate...I'm gonna frame it and preserve it," she shared. "Truly, it’s a huge chapter of my life, and it’s a part that I will never, ever forget."

‘Shadowhunters’ Showrunners Open Up About What Would’ve Happened Beyond That Series Finale Ending

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE SERIES FINALE OF SHADOWHUNTERS!

The series finale ending of Shadowhunters left us not so much devastated that it was all over, but more hopeful of what could happen next.

If you didn't see the finale, Clary sacrified her last rune to kill Jonathan with a hug; and by doing that, she also gave up her memories of the Shadow World after being stripped of her status by Ithuriel. However, at the end of the two and a half hour special, we saw Clary reconnect with Jace one year after the events.

Showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer opened up to ET about what could've happened next after the cliffhanger, and what could've been next.

"It felt so right that the ultimate sacrifice that Clary had to do would be killing her brother and saving the world at the same time," Todd shared about the finale. "We knew that he couldn't die by anyone else’s hand. And we knew that it would be incredibly heartbreaking that his sister – this human that he’s loved so much and he’s wanted her love for so long – is the one who finally wanted to take his life."

He also opened up about what would've been next for Clace.

"The expression of the love between Jace and Clary is such an integral part of the series and we knew we had to pay it off in a huge way," he shared. "The idea that the love that they have is even more powerful than the wrath of the angel Ithuriel is just such a great statement. Love conquers all. Love conquers darkness."

Darren adds, "I would also add that we see the inevitability of Clary as a Shadowhunter. At the end of the day, her fate is that she’ll be a Shadowhunter. We don’t completely answer that question or present that, but I think that’s what the takeaway is. She’ll be a Shadowhunter."

"In the fourth season that we were hoping might somehow materialize itself when we wrote this, we would see Clary and Jace working together to sort of re-train her and get her to back to Shadowhunters status 100 percent."

"We’d have this new Clary with the cool hair, and the awesome outfit, and she’s kind of like a strong young woman who’s found herself as an artist, but knows there’s something missing in her life," Todd shared. "Even just like in the pilot, there was this feeling that would just start all over, but they would be more adult now."

Matthew Daddario & Harry Shum Jr Open Up About Malec’s Wedding in ‘Shadowhunters’ Series Finale

It's official - Magnus and Alec are finally married!

The duo tied the knot at the end of the two and a half hour finale of Shadowhunters.

"I think storyline-wise, [Magnus and Alec] is the most complete storyline," Matthew Daddario shared with TV Guide about the couple's arc. "Alec gets this wonderful thing where he starts off the closed, closeted young man, who's emotionally unavailable, stunted."

"We see over three seasons that constant growth. Towards the end, where he is now, he's become a happy, capable adult. ... It took a significant amount of accepting who he was and accepting that the people around him love him for who he is and what he does — for his character. So it's perfect."

He added, "It's a good, solid storyline, and I'm happy it's ending like this and not just thrown to the wind or ending up in Season 7 where things just sort of go haywire."

Harry Shum Jr also spoke about how it was perfect to have their wedding at the end.

"The fans have been championing that for a long time," he shared. "I hope that they're happy with it. They deserve it for all the love that they've been giving us. And who doesn't like to go to a wedding? I think what's nice is we only invited like 100 people, but it will be millions of people watching on-screen, so they're invited as well."

He added, "We make this show and put it out there for entertainment, but it's the fans that are living it and actually coming together and expressing how much this means to them... being proud of what they are and who they love, and I think that's the legacy of the show."

The ‘Shadowhunters’ Series Finale is ‘Really Bittersweet’ – Watch a Sneak Peek Here!

We can hardly believe that the series finale of Shadowhunters is here.

"It wasn’t what I expected and I don’t think anyone will expect it," star Katherine McNamara recently teased about the two and a half hour special.

She continues, "When I watched it, there are things that the camera picked up on that I didn’t even know I was doing. And the person I was in the scene with, I didn’t even clock that they were doing that either. It creates this ending that really is a question mark and it really is bittersweet. It’s open for interpretation and I’m very excited to see what people have to say."

"The door is left open and it’ll be open for the fandom to interpret it as they will and discuss as they will, which is what they’ve done from Day 1," Kat says, "and it’s why I love them so much."

Shadowhunters airs TONIGHT, May 6th @ 8PM ET/PT on Freefom.
