The 28-year-old actor and 19-year-old actress spoke to Young Hollywood about the most memorable ways they’ve ever showed their loved ones that they care at the premiere of their new movie, The Sun Is Also a Star.
“I believe it’s easy to call, make a phone call, have flowers delivered, but it’s the simple and little things that require your blue collar time that I believe are romantic,” Charles said of the most romantic thing he’s ever done. “Like waiting in the rain for somebody or going out of your way to do simple likes like write letters.”
Yara also opened up about showing her affection, but instead of talking about romance in particular, she shared a sweet gesture she made for her mother.
“I made my mother a cassette tape of her favorite songs for her birthday and it was the best process of figuring out, first of all, how to use a cassette and to second of all go through the crates and really think about what she loves,” she explained.

The Riverdale actor revealed in a new interview that he basically willed it to happen that he would star in the film.
“I read the book twice as soon as I found out they were making it into a movie,†he said. “and I thought, ‘I’m Daniel Bae, I have to play this guy!’ He’s kind of goofy, funny, romantic, very serious and passionate, and I connected with all those things.â€
“The story really touches on so many issues of the day and gives you a different perspective—a human perspective—that comes out of falling in love amid the beautiful diversity and multiculturism that exist in America now,” Charles added.-
The Sun Is Also a Star hits theaters THIS Friday (May 17).

Icelandic composer HerdÃs Stefánsdóttir opened up about working on the soundtrack, saying, “I immediately felt we had a musical connection, which helped create the themes for the film. I was 7 months pregnant when I started writing the score and that made the experience very special for me.”
She added, “I was extra emotional and focused because of my situation, which I felt helped me overall in the creative process, and was able to write the music quickly and felt inspired by the story. I needed to write music that would evolve and mature with the characters in the film and the growing feeling of love.”
The Sun Is Also A Star centers on Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi) who meet – and fall for each other – over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City.
The 28-year-old actor jumped in front of some fans during The Sun Is Also a Star mural unveiling in Bushwick, Brooklyn on a rainy Sunday afternoon (May 5) in New York.
He was joined by author Nicola Yoon and the flick’s director, Ry Russo-Young.
Speaking with EW recently, Charles opened up about instantly connecting with his character Daniel.
“That same day I bought the book and read it,†he shared, adding that “Daniel’s very endearing.”
“There’s a sensitive side to him that he’s not afraid of,” Charles continued. “I found a lot of similarities with who I am as a person. Have I told somebody ‘I love you’ after a day? Yes. Don’t judge me.â€
The Sun Is Also a Star is out in theaters on May 17th.
