'Batwoman' Showrunner Says Javicia Leslie Basically Had the Role After First Audition

Javicia Leslie really nailed her Batwoman audition!

The 33-year-old recently opened up about being prepared for the role way before it was available, and the series’ showrunner dished on her audition.

Javicia blew everyone else away,” Caroline Dries told THR about Javicia being the obvious choice for Ryan Wilder.

The new CW star also shared that she’s been ready for a role like this.

“I’m very active in my personal life, so being able to allow that to be my work, that’s heaven for me. I do Muay Thai. I do fitness training. I run. Anything that’s active I’m always down for, so this is going to be like playing on the playground every day,” Javicia said.

“There’s not many actors that get this opportunity to play in a world that you can continue to develop and expand on for a decade,” she added. “This is a great beginning to what I’m sure will be a very long journey.”

Javicia Leslie Talks Pulling Inspiration From Eartha Kitt For Upcoming 'Batwoman' Role

Javicia Leslie Talks Pulling Inspiration From Eartha Kitt For Upcoming 'Batwoman' Role

Javicia Leslie is opening up about taking on the role of Batwoman for the upcoming second season!

The 33-year-old actress will be starring in the lead role of the CW series as new character Ryan Wilder.

During the DC FanDome event on Saturday (August 22), Javicia dished on her inspiration.

“I’ve always truly admired Eartha Kitt, but I admire Eartha Kitt even outside of acting. I love her for her activism and the fact that she used her art for activism. And just her mentality in general,” she said. “The things that she would say and how dynamic they were and the power that she had as a woman.”

If you didn’t know, Eartha Kitt has a pretty special connection to the Batman universe – she famously played Catwoman in the 1960′s TV show Batman!

Javicia also opened up about her character’s use of a mask.

“Batwoman doesn’t necessarily have a superpower, but I do have the ability to put a mask on and do things that I feel other citizens are too scared to do based off of it ruining their reputation or it putting their family in danger,” she shared during the panel.

Javicia Leslie has landed the lead role in the upcoming second season of Batwoman!

The 33-year-old actress will take on the new character Ryan Wilder, who then becomes the titular caped hero.

Many people will recognize Javicia from her role as Ali Finer in God Friended Me. She’s also been in the BET series The Family Business, and the movie Always a Bridesmaid, which is available to stream on Netflix.

Javicia was born in Germany and later moved to Maryland, where she grew up. She then worked for the government for a year and a half, before eventually moving out to Los Angeles in 2012 to pursue an acting career.

After moving to LA, she was working at a trade show with a friend where she was approached by a talent manager.

“So, I was helping her out and this lady comes up to me while I’m selling things and just asked me, ‘Am I a model or an actress?’ ‘I’m anything you want me to be.’ She was like, ‘Well, I’m a talent manager. Look me up. Tell me if you like what you see. Then come into my office next week and we can meet,’” Javicia said in an interview back in December. “So, I looked her up. I liked what I saw and I signed with her the following week. She’s actually still currently my manager. Then from there, she helped me get an agent.”

A few years had passed and she booked a role on MacGyver, then a recurring role on The Family Business, which was originally supposed to be a movie. She then booked God Friended Me, and The Family Business got picked up as a series instead, and she filmed both projects at the same time!

Javicia has also opened up about being spiritual and how that helps her when auditioning.

“I just believe whatever’s for me, is for me, and my only job is just to be the best version of myself. So, that’s all I brought to the table,” she said. “Luckily this one was for me, but the next one wasn’t. You know? So, it’s just like, you don’t really hold your breath about it. You just go in there, you do your job, and you walk away.”

“I love working. I’m kind of in the stage of my life where I just want to just take every opportunity to work, to travel for work, and to do really different kinds of roles,” Javicia dished about working. “I always want to be able to have that flexibility, which is why I don’t really like taking too much of a hiatus.”

The CW Casts New Lead For 'Batwoman' - Find Out Who!

Batwoman has found it’s new lead actress!

Javicia Leslie will take over the role after Ruby Rose announced she was leaving the show earlier this year.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Javicia said in a statement.

Javicia will star as Ryan Wilder, who is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her.

With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant.

A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.

Javicia is the first Black actress to portray Batwoman, and the series will return to The CW in 2021!

Vanessa Morgan Is Being Looked At For 'Batwoman' Replacement (Report)

Vanessa Morgan Is Being Looked At For 'Batwoman' Replacement (Report)

Vanessa Morgan is in talks to take on the new character for Batwoman!

A new report suggests that the 28-year-old actress is being eyed by producers to take on the new role of Ryan Wilder.

The Cinema Spot says that she is set to audition and do a screen test.

The news comes just over a week after Vanessa called out Riverdale for not properly representing black people, and vowed to only take future roles that do properly represent the black community.

Riverdale boss Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke out in response to Vanessa‘s tweets and said the show will do better.

If Vanessa were to land the Batwoman role, she would have to leave Riverdale for season five when it returns. The upcoming season will be making a time jump into the future, so her character could be written out that way to make way for her to lead the other CW show.

Batwoman's Caroline Dries Addresses Rumors That Kate Kane Will Be Killed Off

Batwoman's Caroline Dries Addresses Rumors That Kate Kane Will Be Killed Off

Caroline Dries is speaking out about some rumors going around on how Kate Kane will be written off of Batwoman.

The showrunner of the series squashed the talk that the character would be killed off.

“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past 15 years, I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope, and I have no interest in participating in it,” she said in a statement to TV Guide. “My comments about recasting Batwoman have launched a storm of rumors and misinformation, and I wanted to clarify something.”

“Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of Season 2. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that,” Caroline continued.
