Elle Fanning flashes a grin in her new cover shoot for Elle Australia‘s November issue, on sale Monday (October 21)!
Here’s what the Teen Spirit star had to say to the outlet:
On her Cannes Film Festival looks and her love of Old Hollywood glamour: “At Cannes, you can go big and that’s what I wanted. I wanted to do separates, and I asked Dior if they would be into a ball skirt and shirt situation, and it morphed into the New Look. We added the hat very last-minute. It was exciting because I’m very nostalgic of the ’50s and ’60s. Old Hollywood glamour is so classic, I wish it would come back.”
On feeling most at home on the red carpet: “I dressed really crazy at school. So obviously people weren’t necessarily going to be like, ‘You’re so cool.’ The red carpet was like a home for me—from a young age, the fashion community embraced me. The red carpet felt safe. I don’t feel judged on it—I feel free to express that side of myself. It’s such a creative outlet, something I could really take control of.”
On how Disney princesses have evolved: “When I was young I watched all the animated Disney films, and they’re beautiful in their own way, but the women aren’t extremely complex and they do rely on the men a lot. The modern fairytale with a twist is so important.”
On working with her older sister Dakota Fanning: “We’d love to do something together… It would be great, because we don’t really talk about each other’s work. … She knows what I’m thinking, and she’s the best advice giver. As we get older, we get to be good friends.”

Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning prepare their Halloween costumes in this cute clip from when they were kids!
The Neon Demon star posted the video of herself and her older sister on Instagram on Saturday (October 19).
In the clip, Dakota – in a furry pink top and headpiece with cat ears – does her makeup as a younger Elle goes through her makeup bag.
“What is this?” Elle asks, holding up an eyebrow brush.
“It’s for your eyebrows!” Dakota Fanning replies sternly. “And you’re not allowed to do it. Go get your wig back on!”
Elle then proceeds to put on her big red wig, proclaiming, “I did it.”
“Getting ready for a girl’s night out with @dakotafanning #halloween #gogetyourwigbackon,” Elle Fanning captioned the video.

Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie visit some lucky students on International Day of the Girl!
The actresses – who co-star in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – spent some time at the Mulberry School for Girls on Friday (October 11) in London, England.
Ten young students from the renowned school were invited to take part in a special meet-and-greet which gave them the opportunity to ask the two leading actresses questions which they had composed themselves.
The topics included the importance of diverse female roles, the increasing pressures that social media has on young people, and how every girl deserves the right to an education.
International Day of the Girl is an international observance day declared by the United Nations. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

In the new issue, the 21-year-old actress opens up about playing a powerful princess, politics, and just which Friends character she related to the most. Check it:
On playing a powerful princess in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil: “My mom, my sister, my grandmother, and I, we all live together. So, there is a strong sense of female empowerment that I’ve always had in my life. It’s significant to know that there are so many different types of women. I hate that in order to be strong you have to look like this or to be soft you have to look like this. Those stereotypes are just not true. My worth is knowing I can be anything. In Maleficent I play a princess [Aurora] who is strong in being completely feminine and isn’t afraid of that feeling. It’s a quality I also have. And, obviously, this version is different from the first one. I’m not fighting with a sword just so I can be stronger.â€
On being asked to politically engage publicly: “Sometimes I feel like I don’t know all the information. Like, am I qualified to speak on this? But I also think it’s OK for people to say that they don’t know or aren’t sure yet. Angelina [Jolie] said that to me after a recent interview we did for Maleficent 2. She said, “You know what? It’s OK not to answer things.†I mean, I’m still learning.â€
On her love of Friends: “I was always curious and mischievous. Like when I watched Friends, I loved Phoebe. I loved that she was gawky. I had a real awkward phase. I grew 12 inches in a year. I didn’t want to be like everyone else in school. There was a certain confidence that I had, that I was like, “I want you to make fun of me because that makes me feel cool.â€

The actress attended the event held at El Capitan Theatre on Monday (September 30) in Los Angeles.

She was joined by her co-stars including Harris Dickinson.
Elle wore a green gown with floral designs, as well as gloves adorned with “blood drops” from her character’s pricked finger.
