Congratulations are in order for James Maslow!
The former Big Time Rush member took home the fan-chosen Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star award at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on Friday (September 22) in Las Vegas.

“This win for me is not only exciting, but reassuring,” James told iHeartRadio before the event. “My album How I Like It is by far the most personal thing I have ever put out into the world, and I can’t begin to tell you the anxiety and fear that comes along with that. What if people don’t like it? How are people going to judge me for it? Hell, what’s going to happen next?”
“But seeing the reactions thus far, and especially winning the Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star contest with it definitely puts some of those concerns aside,” James added. “I’m more excited than I’ve ever been to keep going and cannot wait to play the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Vegas!”
James kicked off the weekend with epic performance that showed off his vocals, dance moves, and piano skills.

James Maslow takes in the amazing view from the top of the Empire State Building in New York City on Friday morning (August 11).
The “Cry” singer got the chance to perform at his appearance for press and fans before leaving the Big Apple.
James recently spoke with Digital Journal about keeping up with all his fans on social media, and how he’s still getting the hang of using it altogether.
“It’s a little strange to me, since I do have a pretty sizable social media following, and I’m incredibly appreciative of it, but I didn’t really grow up with it,” James admits.
He adds, “I just turned 27. I didn’t have Instagram in high school. To me, it’s not innate and natural to constantly be checking and using it, and Snapchatting. I still have to remind myself, or be reminded by management, to keep up with it.”
However, he loves using it to connect with all his fans: “It is pretty damn cool that I have direct access to my fans.”
James continues, “It’s something that really didn’t exist before at all, they knew of me, and now people can tweet me and Instagram me and they can ask me specific questions, and I can respond personally, and that’s something that is invaluable and I love.”

The singer sat down with the program about his music and also chatted with The Trend the day before about working on his album for years and how it came to be.
“I probably wrote over a 100 songs,” he says, for his new album, How I Like It. “Each one in the moment, when you’re writing it, you’re like ‘oh this is amazing’, and then you come back [later] and realize it’s not good enough for the album.”
James adds, “For this album, I never wanted to reference another artist and say that I wanted to create something just like something you’ve heard. Each time, it was organic jumping in. Maybe sitting at a piano or guitar, and doing everything from scratch.”

The singer opened up about his time with Big Time Rush and his want to go solo and succeed.
“A little bit of both,” he says about the difficulty of going solo after BTR.
James adds, “You have the diehard fans that I love to death who have gotten to know me on a personal level by watching me on social media every day. They know what I’m capable of.
“You also have a huge amount of the fan base that isn’t as engaged because there isn’t as much content out. It’s my job to show them why I’m doing this. I’m so grateful for all of them regardless. It’s my job to rebrand.
The James you see, is the James you get.
“I’m not a new James, this is who I’ve been all along, you just saw a different side of me. I was at work before, but now I can be me.”

Maia Mitchell is slaying the black carpet at the Spotify Best New Artist Nominees party earlier this week in Los Angeles.
The Fosters actress stepped out for the event with Rudy Mancuso, Katelyn Tarver, Echosmith, James Maslow, Charlie Puth, Daya, Maren Morris, Symon, and Noah Cyrus.
Earlier, Maia opened up about Callie’s arrest on The Fosters, dishing that her character and mom Stef will connect even more.
“She really just needs to go give a statement because she’s worried about the other people and she wants to give all of the information,” Maia shared. “Mike is very much involved as well because he’s at the police station anyway. You see the mothers find out the full extent.”
She adds, “Stef and Callie really connect over their sense of social justice and that kind of need to fix everything. They’re very similar in a lot of ways. I don’t think Stef is mad at her. She really understands [the situation]…they’re just worried.”
