Phoebe Tonkin Dishes On Hayley's Own Legacy on 'The Originals'

Hayley may be popping up in the future on The Originals, despite tonight’s episode being her funeral.

Phoebe Tonkin shared with TV Guide that there’s more to come with her character, especially when it involves Hope.

“Without giving too much away, my final scene [of filming] was with my daughter Hope,” she confirms. “Hayley’s journey throughout all five seasons was to protect her child, and it was nice to wrap up the show that way too.”

Elsewhere in the episode, “God’s Gonna Trouble the Water”, Ivy (Shiva Kalaiselvan) reveals some startling news to Klaus (Joseph Morgan) about the dark magic that’s been keeping him away from his family; and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) turns to some unexpected allies to save Antoinette’s life.

Phoebe Tonkin Opens Up About Her Final Scene as Hayley on 'The Originals'

Phoebe Tonkin has opened up about Hayley’s death on The Originals and how she really felt saying goodbye.

The 28-year-old actress spoke to EW in a post-episode interview, which showed Hayley sacrificing herself for her daughter Hope.

“Every season we prepare to say goodbye for good as we never know if we will come back for another season or not till very last minute, but knowing this season would be [the end], it definitely made it easier to plan wrap gifts and say proper goodbyes to my buddies who I’ve spent 5 years with,” Phoebe shared about bidding her character.

That’s not to say that this wasn’t an easy thing to film, either.

She added, “My last scene sadly was at one in the morning, and the core cast weren’t there, nor were some of the main crew members as there were two units shooting that day.”

Phoebe adds, “I basically ran around the studio yelling anyone’s name so I could give as many tearful hugs and goodbyes before I left the studio for the last time.”

Joseph Morgan Opens Up About Hayley's Death on 'The Originals': 'It Made Him Rather Angry'

Hayley’s death on The Originals hit everyone pretty hard, but it’s especially upsetting for Klaus.

Speaking with TV Guide, Joseph Morgan opened up about what’s it’s like to lose her and becoming a single parent now that she’s gone.

“You know, he’d rather grown to like her,” Joseph shared. “I think they, in the beginning, were certainly at odds. They were two people who shared a night together and had a child because of it and would not be in each others’ lives if it weren’t for that child.”

He continues, “They’ve learned to live together to the point where they have become a family — a sort of dysfunctional, strange family, but a family nonetheless, and so losing her was definitely a blow. I think that it’s losing a family member. So yeah, it was very upsetting and made him rather angry, I think.”

As for the future on the series and becoming a single parent to Hope, it’s going to be difficult for him.

“He really feels the weight and responsibility of being the only parent,” Joseph adds. “That’s tremendously difficult for him to deal with. I feel like Hayley’s always been a much better parent than him, and she spent the time — she’s spent the last seven years, while he’s been away, with Hope.”

“For him to come back after such a long absence and then to be thrown into this situation where, ‘Hey it’s just you now with your daughter,’ it’s a very steep learning curve for him. So that’s tremendously upsetting.”

The Originals airs Wednesdays on The CW.

Danielle Rose Russell Talks About The Impact Hayley's Death Will Have on Hope on 'The Originals'

Hope was just dealt a massive blow on The Originalslosing her mom, Hayley.

Danielle Rose Russell talked with TVGuide after the episode, opening up about how this will impact Hope going forward on the series.

“[It's] going to have a massive effect on Hope and the rest of the family,” she shared. “It’s going to disrupt Hope’s kind of self-journey of figuring out who she is, and so she goes through a really drastic change midway through the season.”

EP Jeffrey Lieber added that “for Hope, to lose a parent is horrifying. And especially if you’re of a group of people to whom the death of people you love is not a given.”

“She is the daughter of everlasting creatures, right? Death is both all around her because they are creatures of death and also something that she’s not necessarily prepared for because there’s sort of a given of forever-ness with them.”

He continued, “From a human standpoint, anyone losing a parent just changes them. It forces them to deal with all sorts of things they didn’t think they had to as a child, but also there’s a specific color about this given the nature of her lineage.”

The Originals airs Wednesdays on The CW.

'The Originals' Character That You Didn't Want To Die, Actually Did Die on Last Night's Episode

The Originals delivered on a character death that fans picked up on last year.

In last night’s episode, Hayley, played by Phoebe Tonkin, sacrificed herself to save her daughter Hope. Hayley ripped off Greta’s daylight ring and pulled them both into the sun.

Just before that, Hayley actually bound her werewolf side, meaning she was a full vampire.

“It was one of those things we knew from the beginning of the season,” EP Jeffery Lieber shared with TVGuide after the episode. “We were looking for a way to do it at a point in the season where it really resonated, where it changed all the other characters, but left us enough space to still be able to tell the rest of Hayley’s story.”

He adds, “That was what was really important…Being able to do it midseason, it causes an inflection point and it causes every single other character to change in a meaningful, primal way. It also again gives us space in the back half to finish telling the story in a really interesting, cool way.”

But is this the really the last time we’ll see Hayley? No.

“I don’t think I’m giving anything away in saying that she is in other episodes this season, so that her death is not nearly her end,” he adds, giving fans some kind of silver lining.

Speaking with TVLine recently, Phoebe‘s Originals co-star Daniel Gillies opened up about Elijah’s lingering feelings, if there were any, on the show after the latest episode.

He adds, “It’s going to be a real story of if love can be felt without the mind.”
