The Flash's Joe West Will Be Affected By Current Social Climate In New Season

Joe West (Jesse L Martin)’s storyline in season seven of The Flash will be very topical.

Showrunner Eric Wallace recently dished that the current social climate regarding law enforcement will be depicted.

“Joe’s story line this season is inspired by the societal changes happening in today’s world,” he told EW. “Because with everything we’re all waking up to each day in 2020, I felt there was a great opportunity here — even within our fantastical, family-oriented show — to comment indirectly on truths folks could easily recognize. And do so in an entertaining way.”

“As we’re working our way through Joe’s wonderful story line this year, Joe gets challenged by the events of the world that are going on nowadays. Of course, in a sci-fi superhero way, because we’re on a superhero show. And he really rises up,” Eric added. “I’m so proud of the character and I’m so excited for Jesse to take Joe in just a little bit of a new direction. Because Joe’s a good man with a good heart. And if he sees injustice, he’s not a person who turns a blind eye to it. He’s a person who says something and does something.”

Eric did say though that it won’t happen right away and will start to affect the storyline around the middle of the season.

“It will be very obvious as Joe goes through these changes and ends up in a place that’s unexpected for him, but that is honorable and very aware of today’s problems from a law perspective. So it’s made the storytelling for his character’s story line, I think, the most exciting thing that I’ve been able to write for him since I’ve been the showrunner. I just can’t wait for folks to see it,” he said.

In case you missed it, see what Eric said about Ralph Dibny and Sue Dearborn’s storylines now that Hartley Sawyer will no longer on the show.

The Flash's Sue Dearborn Is Not Going Anywhere, Despite Ralph Dibny Leaving

The Flash fans will not have to worry about Sue Dearborn being written out of the show.

Last week, we revealed that Hartley Sawyer‘s Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man will be written off in the upcoming seventh season, following his firing over the summer.

Natalie Dreyfuss‘ character Sue Dearborn came into the show through her relationship with Ralph, but The Flash‘s showrunner Eric Wallace has assured that she isn’t going anywhere!

“You’re going to see Sue more than once this year even without the Elongated Man — on her own, making appearances, and helping Team Flash in an unexpected way. And it’s just going to be hilarious because she was so much fun,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“I called up Natalie and said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re still going to be part of this season. We’ll find a way.’ Now, when I told her that, to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure [how]. But I am happy to report we found a way,” Eric added, saying that keeping her was “one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever had to make as a showrunner.”

Eric also shared about some of their plans with Sue in season seven, and her future in the show.

“Now we can expand her character and give her more backstory and more growth in ways that we hadn’t initially planned. [It's] really exciting to see how she’s going to interact more with Team Flash once her name has been cleared — because we are going to clear her name obviously. But then what’s the reason for her to come back to Central City? And that’s going to be a bit of her story this season,” he dished.

“You try to take lemons and make lemonade, and suddenly, now Sue’s possibilities are wide open,” Eric continued. “And we have a particular storyline that she’s going to help us out with, [specifically] with one of our villains this season that we would have never gotten to had not the circumstances changed. So it is going to be, I think, fun and unexpected for the audience, as much as it was for us to write.”

Hartley Sawyer's 'The Flash' Character To Be Written Out of Series

The Flash will be losing Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man in season seven!

As you may know, Hartley Sawyer, who played the role, was fired from the show over the summer after resurfaced, offensive tweets.

Now, showrunner Eric Wallace is addressing what will happen to the character in the upcoming season.

“The beauty of comic book stories and superhero stories are the conventions that heroes come and go, but they never fade away and they never disappear entirely. So we’re going to treat it like we would if we were writing a comic book graphic novel. We’re giving the Elongated Man a bit of a rest for while. But we will leave the door open,” Eric told Entertainment Weekly. “Who knows what the future could bring. It is unknown. But I’m not saying by any means that it’s the end of the character, in fact, quite the opposite. We just don’t know when he will return, or in what form he will return. And that’s the beauty of comic book stories. It keeps it fresh.”

He also added that they are going to have the character in the beginning of the season with another actor to wrap up the storyline.

“In order to wrap that up, which we’re going to do at the top of season 7, Ralph has to be part of that,” Eric said. “Now thank goodness, Ralph is a guy who can change faces and his appearance in many ways. Without giving any spoilers away, there are a couple of ways that we can have Elongated Man still appear in at least one episode this season to wrap that storyline up, that gets us what we need and still allows fans to say goodbye to the character, at least for the indefinite future.”

“It’s funny, I guess technically it would be a recasting, but the character won’t be a big part of season 7. He’ll only be a part of just wrapping up the Sue storyline,” he added. “Yes, one could say it is a recasting, but we’re going to do it in a way that I think honors the spirit of the character and provides not only a satisfying conclusion to Sue’s murder mystery, but also it’s done with some humor.”

'The Flash' Showrunner Would Love to See These DC Comic Characters Appear In the Arrowverse

Eric Wallace is dishing on some dream guest stars for the Arrowverse!

The Flash showrunner recently opened up about some of the characters from the DC Comics Universe he would love to see in the CW world.

Eric shared that having Ezra Miller from The Flash film in Crisis On Infinite Earths opened the door to possibilities of more guest stars.

“It said to us, ‘Huh, if we could get The Flash from the DC Extended Universe into the Arrowverse, this can open the door for other characters.’ So I don’t know what’s going to happen in 2021 and 2022, things have obviously slowed down because of COVID and because of production winding down,” he said during DC FanDome.

“I would certainly love to see the Arrowverse have the Amazons and the Wonder Woman universe come to us, or Aquaman and his universe. I would love to see Cyborg,” Eric added. “All of these things are welcomed now because of this one event, this one crazy idea that again, I’m not sure who had it, but Marc Guggenheim made that call and when he called me and said, ‘How can we pull this off? I need your help’ I immediately said yes.”

“And then the rest of the incredible Flash crew because we had to film it. Even though it was appearing in Arrow, Ezra and the DC rep who was with him came to our Flash sets. It was actually filmed by our crew on our sets. And it was one of our directors in house that had to do that scene.”

First 'The Flash' Season 7 Trailer Features A LOT of Spoilers - Watch Now!

The trailer for the upcoming seventh season of The Flash is here!

The video was unveiled during the show’s panel at the DC FanDome event on Saturday (August 22).

Candace Patton‘s Iris West is getting haunted in the Mirrorverse, with Barry doing anything he can to help her.

“It’ll be interesting to see when she comes out — and I believe she’ll come out very soon — how she has been affected by being stuck in this maddening world with this maddening villain,” Candace said during the panel.

Showrunner Eric Wallace shared that in the trailer, “even though it’s only footage really from one episode, pay attention to the way it’s presented. It’s actually huge spoilers all over the place.”

The footage in the trailer is mostly from season six, episode 20, which was 85% filmed before the pandemic.

Ashley Rickards is returning as the villain Top, and Brandon McKnight and Kayla Compton have been promoted to series regulars for the season.

Could Grant Gustin Be In 'The Flash' Movie, CW's 'Flash' Showrunner Says...

Grant Gustin might have a chance at bringing his version of The Flash to the big screen!

The showrunner for his CW series, Eric Wallace, talked about the possibility of the 30-year-old Arrowverse star appearing in the upcoming Flash movie.

“I am so excited about The Flash movie. I literally will be the first person in line to go see it. I love all things of The Flash, all different iterations of The Flash,” Eric said during DC Fandome on Saturday (August 22). “Obviously in my heart of hearts, Grant is my favorite Flash because that’s my show, you know? But it was such an honor and a privilege to have Ezra [Miller] come play in our Arrowverse, even though it was only that one scene, and Grant and Ezra got along so well. There was definitely a camaraderie there and a mutual respect for each other as performers, because they’re very, very different, right? They’re very different people. But they are both so, so gifted and talented. So yes, I can’t wait to see this movie.”

He then said he’ll give Grant time off from the TV show to go film for the movie…

“I would love to see Grant appear somewhere in their version of the film,” Eric said. “Say I said, ‘You know what? I’ll give you a couple of weeks off easy now.’ I don’t know if they’ll do that, but I’m putting it out there. Because I know Grant would be excited. I think he would have some fun.”

“I also told Ezra, with open arms, we would welcome him back. I would love to have him back for longer, for a full episode of The Flash, if we can somehow make it happen,” he added. “Schedules are so tough. He’s a very busy man. He has not just The Flash franchise, but other franchises too. So I don’t know how possible it is, but I do know it’s not impossible because we proved it in Crisis when we saw the two Flashes together. So I’m going to be hopeful and I’m going to put that energy out there.”

“Hopefully someday sooner, rather than later, we will see those two Flashes of Ezra and Grant together and for anybody reading this article, I am happy to help accommodate in any way possible.”

Ezra and Grant of course first shared the screen as their own Flashes during the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, and with DC diving into the multiverse for the film franchise, it could possible for Grant to join in. There has even been talk of him making an appearance in the upcoming film back in February!
