Alisha Boe & Justin Prentice Talk About Why '13 Reasons Why' Shows The Difficult Things To Watch: 'It's Incredibly Important'

Alisha Boe and Justin Prentice are opening up about their controversial show, 13 Reasons Why, and just why the series chooses to show the difficult things to watch.

Speaking with Variety this weekend, both actors addressed Bryce’s trial where he got a slap on the wrist, and the events that led up to the almost school shooting at Liberty High.

“We wanted to show what would … make a person want to do something like that, and I feel like it’s happening so much in America that it’s absolutely disgusting,” Alisha says of the shooting storyline.

She adds, “Not even after like the fifth [school shooting] we haven’t implemented change, and it’s like enough is enough. 13 Reasons Why is a form of entertainment that likes to shed light on political issues, and we wanted to show something from the first perspective, but I think it was incredibly important because that’s what’s happening in America, and we need to talk about it.”

She and Justin also hit on the importance of Bryce’s trial and why you’re supposed to feel ticked off about his sentence.

“People were upset when they watched it, but unfortunately that’s reality,” Alisha says. “What the show doesn’t shy away from is telling the truth in a heartbreaking way, and they’re supposed to be pissed off.”

Justin adds, “Jocks, athletes get off easily, especially if you’re a straight white male from a wealthy family.”

“Unfortunately that’s how reality plays out nowadays, so our show tries to showcase things as realistically as possible, and as much as it sucks that incidence is very realistic.”

13 Reasons Why, seasons one and two, are streaming now on Netflix.

Katherine Langford & Dylan Minnette Join '13 Reasons Why Cast' For Netflix Event

Katherine Langford & Dylan Minnette Join '13 Reasons Why Cast' For Netflix Event

The cast of 13 Reasons Why got together for a special Netflix event!

The cast – including Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, Derek Luke, Alisha Boe and Miles Heizer – hit the carpet at a Netflix FYSee event on Friday (June 1) at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles.

During the panel discussion, creator Brian Yorkey opened up about what fans can expect if the show is renewed for a third season.

“I think the themes are sort of inherent in the action of Season 2. It’s a question of, is there more story to tell, do we want to see these kids not only continue to recover, but, how do they bring forward into their lives the thing they’ve learned about what they’ve been through?” Brian said.

Meanwhile, Katherine once again said goodbye to the show, adding that she plans to always keep in touch with the show’s fans.

“I think 13 Reasons Why will always be an important part of my life. It was the first job I ever had,” Katherine said.

Alisha Boe Reveals She Originally Auditioned For This Character on '13 Reasons Why'

Alisha Boe Reveals She Originally Auditioned For This Character on '13 Reasons Why'

Alisha Boe plays Jessica on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and we honestly, couldn’t see anyone else in that role – however, it’s not the original part she went out for.

Speaking with W magazine in a new interview, the 21-year-old actress revealed that she actually auditioned for Hannah Baker (just like Anne Winters, who plays Chloe, did).

“I was so surprised when I booked 13 Reasons Why, because I originally auditioned for Hannah and was like, ‘There is no way I am going to book a lead on the show,’” she shared with the mag.

Although she didn’t get the role of Hannah, the show did like her as Jessica.

“I had read the book when I was 14, and it was one of my favorite books. When they asked me to audition for Jessica, I disconnected with it,” Alisha says. “She’s supposed to be a pretty, popular teenager, and in my head, just from being brainwashed from all these breakdowns growing up, it’s a blonde girl with blue eyes.”

She adds, “But since Brian [Yorkey, showrunner] and all of them are so inclusive with their casting, they didn’t even think about it. It was my first time being able to be separated from being someone’s best friend, or being the butt of the joke, or an accessory. It was a dream come true for me. I didn’t expect it to come that fast.”

Hannah Baker Probably Won't Be Part of '13 Reasons Why' Season 3 If There Is One

Hannah Baker Probably Won't Be Part of '13 Reasons Why' Season 3 If There Is One

Katherine Langford and Ross Butler head out of ABC studios in New York City on Thursday morning (May 24).

The two 13 Reasons Why actors joined co-stars Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro and Devin Druid (not pictured) on Good Morning America to talk about season two of the Netflix series.

Speaking with THR earlier, Katherine admitted that if the show were to be renewed for a third season, she wasn’t positive that Hannah Baker would come back as well – and it looks like showrunner, Brian Yorkey, agrees.

Talking with EW, he shared that “should we get a season 3, the loss of Hannah will continue to be the inciting traumatic event for this group of kids and parents. It will always be part of the story.”

He adds, “But I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go.’ If the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done.”

13 Reasons Why is streaming on Netflix now.
