Joey Pollari has publicly come out as gay, just as his new movie, Love, Simon, is out in theaters.

The 23-year-old actor plays, Lyle, a server at a Waffle House who may or may not be Blue, a closeted teen who corresponds with Simon through email.

“I think all my friends and family knew on some level. I think maybe two people were shocked,” Joey shared with The Advocate.

He adds, “The only part that was difficult was me coming out to myself. And I think that is the most difficult coming-out…my mom knew. She laid hints for me everywhere.”

Joey adds that he hopes Love, Simon will fill a representation hole.

“It meant a lot to me when I was younger,” he says of recognizing the importance of queer public figures. “To see people who are out, to see people who are all kinds of things — people who are so clear in their anger, people who are clear about their arrogance, their pettiness, their desperation.”

“I mean, that’s why I go to the movies… I go to learn something about someone else. In a byproduct, I learn about myself. That’s the power of representation.”

Love, Simon is out now in theaters.

There are only a few days left until Love, Simon hits theaters and the cast of the inspiring new movie celebrated its release at the Los Angeles premiere!

Nick Robinson and Katherine Langford were joined by co-stars Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Keiynan Lonsdale, Josh Duhamel, Talitha Bateman, Tony Hale, Natasha Rothwell, Miles Heizer, Joey Pollari, and Clark Moore at the event on Tuesday (March 13) at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles.

Love, Simon, which is getting rave reviews and currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, hits theaters this weekend.

Yara Shahidi wears an oversized lace top that we all want in our closets while arriving at the Pilot Pen & GBK Pre-Emmy Luxury Lounge at L’Ermitage Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday (September 15).

The 16-year-old black-ish actress also stopped by Kari Feinstein’s Style Lounge at Siren Studios along with Marsai Martin, Lance Lim, AnnaLynne McCord, Emma Kenney, model Hailee Lautenbach, Diego Boneta and Joey Pollari.

“I have natural hair and have always embraced it,” Yara recently shared with NYTimes’ The Cut about cultural appropriation. “The first time I straightened my hair I was 11, and it was only because I was getting a haircut. And I thought, ‘Oh, I like this! I’ll keep it this way’, and did until I washed my hair.”

She continued, “I know how culturally significant hair is because curls are representative of my people, but I’m also a teenager who wants to experiment with hair and see what it looks like in a different way without being viewed as a sellout.”

Yara added, “I was explaining to someone the other day, we’re not complaining about this ‘boxer braid’ term for the sake of being sticklers. Just can you please embrace the fact that black culture contributed to things?”

The two young actors were joined by co-stars Joey Pollari, Connor Jessup, Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Lili Taylor,Michael J. McDonald, Elvis Nolasco, and Richard Cabral.

“I don’t understand why people were running away from it,” Joey recently shared with Vanity Fair about his role on the show. “I was excited to delve into [it].”

He added, “[In one scene, my character] Eric says, ‘I’m gay but I’m not a faggot,’ which was the first time that that word was said on ABC. I was told moments before shooting. That baffles me, considering all the other words that are allowed, and some that aren’t allowed. From moment one, it seemed like it was about something so much bigger than his sexuality. It was about shame, and male aggression, and that conversation within sports. I couldn’t wait to be part of that tapestry.”

The 19-year-old actor and singer joined his co-stars Joey Pollari, Connor Jessup, Angelique Rivera, Lili Taylor, Elvis Nolasco and executive producer Michael McDonald on the panel as they chatted up their ABC show.
